From Refugee to Barber to Social Media Star: The Inspiring Story of Sam’s Barber Shop
In a modest plaza on New Britain Avenue in Rocky Hill, CT, sits Sam’s Barber Shop, a local business with an extraordinary story. The shop’s unassuming sign belies the incredible journey of its owner, Sabedin Balija, better known to his customers as Sam.
From Kosovo to Connecticut
Sam’s story begins in Kosovo, a region scarred by the violence of the 1990s. As war broke out in 1998, 17-year-old Sam was among the hundreds of thousands of Kosovar Albanians forced to flee. In 1999, a church-based refugee placement program brought Sam and his brother to the U.S., where they first settled in North Dakota.
Alone in an unfamiliar country, Sam learned to adapt quickly. Over the years, he moved across states, working various jobs, before ultimately arriving in Connecticut in 2013. During this time, Sam developed the resilience and resourcefulness that would later become the foundation of his entrepreneurial success.
Building a Dream
Determined to create a stable future, Sam earned his barber’s license and, in 2019, opened Sam’s Barber Shop LLC in Rocky Hill. Just months later, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, forcing the shop to close temporarily. For many small business owners, this would have marked the end, but for Sam, it became a turning point.
Feeling restless and worried about the future of his business, Sam turned to social media. Teaching himself how to shoot and edit videos, he began posting on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. What started as a way to keep his business visible during the shutdown quickly transformed into a second venture: social media influencer.
A Global Reach
Sam’s videos—featuring hair transformations, shop life, and thoughtful moments—struck a chord with audiences worldwide. One of his TikToks garnered an astonishing 32 million views, with others achieving tens of millions more. Collectively, Sam’s content has been viewed over 200 million times, making him one of the most successful social media influencers in Connecticut.
His reach isn’t just local or national; it’s global. Fans from Pakistan, India, Thailand, Egypt, Dubai, and even Sam’s home country of Kosovo regularly engage with his content.
Expanding the Vision
Today, Sam’s Barber Shop is thriving, both as a local business and an online brand. Sam recently transformed a room in his shop into a social media studio, complete with professional lighting and a stylish barber chair. His next goal? Launching a line of hair care products for his global audience.
Despite skepticism from some, Sam’s venture into social media has proven wildly successful. As Sam puts it, “One video can change your life.” For him, it’s been hundreds of videos—and countless lives touched by his inspiring story.
Living the Dream in Rocky Hill
Now a proud father of four, Sam has firmly rooted himself in Rocky Hill, a town he describes as “nice, convenient, quiet, but not too quiet. It’s perfect for a barber.”
Sam’s journey from a war-torn Kosovo refugee to a thriving business owner and global influencer is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of never giving up on your dreams. At Sam’s Barber Shop, every haircut is a reflection of that incredible journey—and every video a chance to share it with the world.
